Pipkin Homes

Principals:
Shane Pipkin

Address:
5304 Clear Creek Drive, Flower Mound, TX 75022

About Pipkin Homes

Shane Pipkin, the founder of Pipkin Homes, has been working as a general contractor in Dallas for over 30 years. Pipkin first started his career in Charlotte, North Carolina, renovating homes he purchased and sold. After moving to Dallas in 2010, he worked for a custom home general contractor in the Park Cities area and saw first hand the shortcomings of the remodel and build industry.

Soon after, a personal project would change his course again. Shane and his wife, Dana, bought a home in Highland Park. They gutted and renovated their 1934 house and, in doing so, realized they enjoyed the process so much that they wanted to continue doing the same high-quality work for others. Pipkin Homes was born from this passion in 2014. The team has been mentioned in Luxe Interiors + Design, and they are a member of the National Association of Home Builders.

Pipkin Homes was faced with a challenge when their clients came to them with a remodel idea. They wanted the look and feel of a modern loft, but recreated in their traditional suburban home. A breathtaking remodel they now call “Traditional Meets Modern” thus came to life. Their goal was to combine the two design elements to create a uniquely imagined space, so they opened up the floor-plan and modernized the interior design. They were able to create sharp angles and clean lines for a bare bones architectural feel. To introduce the “traditional” goal of the design, Pipkin installed ornamental iron entry doors. Doing so achieved the perfect balance. The iron doors contrast nicely with the clean modern lines of the home’s loft-like interior.

A classic 4,646-square-foot Bluffview Estates home shows off its striking contrast of exposed white brick, ebonized walls, and other dark hardwood. Beige, gray and espresso furniture offer further depth and variety. The house is filled with rich luxury items, like Amethyst lamps and a clay Mexican ceremonial shield. The home is owned by Meredith Musselman, daughter of the late style great Shelly Musselman, who owned Forty Five Ten. The house is optimized for hosting. The living room features a leather bar by Promemoria, and the TV is hidden behind a large, two-way mirror. When a couple purchased a Highland Park manor, Gonzalo Bueno used the wife’s glamorous fashion sense to help them decorate their new home. He started with a primer of warm white walls that wouldn’t overwhelm a bold and diverse mix of furniture and art. With the help of the home’s builders, the Mendoza Brothers 13, cast stone details were exchanged with marble. Other finishes and details included lacquer, gold, and crystal with silk and velvet-lined furnishings. The end result of this home, featured in Luxe interiors and design, was tasteful elegance.

Morgan Farrow

Address:
1528 Slocum Street, Dallas, TX 75207

About Morgan Farrow Interiors

Farrow got her start with an interior design degree from Abilene Christian University and has been working in residential interior design since 2007. Her team offers a full set of services from plan development down to a home’s accessories. Farrow balances form and function in her client’s homes to create what she calls “livable luxury.” She often collaborates with the award-winning firm Tatum Brown Custom Homes and has worked in residences found across Dallas, as well as in Kansas and Michigan. Her work has been featured in D Home, Luxe Interiors and Design, and Traditional Home.

One of the biggest things that inspires my designs are getting to know and understand the clients on a personal level… how they’ll use the home, what are their passions, do they entertain or are they homebodies.  We spend a lot of one on one time with our clients working to draw out all that information and I think it helps our design be more thoughtful.  – Morgan Farrow

Featured Projects

Morgan Farrow worked closely with the homeowner to decorate a custom home in the University Park neighborhood. Luxury artistic pieces in eclectic styles make this space unique, such as a John Newsom painting and Brendan Bass Showroom slipcover chairs found in the foyer. Unique lighting completes each room. Farrow decided on AV Mazzega glass ceiling structures to finish off the foyer, while selecting a funky gold Arteriors piece for the living room. Another statement piece in the living room is the floor-to-ceiling concrete and black metal fireplace, designed by Farrow and created by East Side Creations. The overall result is a bold and colorful home that matches its owner. Farrow helped another client finish her new 9,000-square-foot home. Some of its selling factors were its open floor plan with high ceilings, spacious six bedrooms, and large closets. The client picked out a blue-gray white for the walls and a gray wash for the hardwood floors, which Farrow played off of, choosing rugs with a lavender, pink, and blue color scheme. The nucleus of the home is the living room, which Farrow decked out with a lavish lavender Oushak rug from the Interior Resources showroom. Farrow mixed new and vintage pieces throughout the home to match her client’s personality, lifestyle, and existing collection of pieces.

House Beautiful’s “Next Wave Designers”

Address:
Dallas, TX 75205

About Amy Berry Interior Design and Decoration

Berry studied at London’s Inchbald School of Design and worked for Pierre Frey and Volga Linen before moving back to Texas where she started her own studio in 2013. She blends modern and European elements to create a new contemporary American style. Berry designs her own collection of small pieces, including dog beds, pillows, tabletop linens, and other decor. She was named one of House Beautiful’s “Next Wave Designers” in 2016.

Featured Projects

In June, Southern Living featured a Highland Park home decorated by Amy Berry Interior Design and Decoration. The home features gorgeous outdoor spaces, including a kitchenette with a grill, ice maker and sink, and a 600-square-foot seating area under a veranda. Berry hung mirrors and added a painting over the fireplace to make the space feel more like a room. Inside, the family had a mass of family heirlooms, including a 1940s chandelier, which Berry paired with a mint green Schumacher wallpaper in the dining room. She tore down a wall and added pocket doors to open up the dark dining room into the more window-heavy family room. A goal of the owner was to create a space that invites people to put their feet up. Instead of a typical sofa-based living room, Amy Berry opted for four club chairs facing a large velvet ottoman. In another Dallas home decorated by Berry, the designer uses a light base to pull together distinct rooms featuring pink, silver, gold, coral, and gray. A limestone-topped island with seating divides a small kitchen from the larger living area. Chocolate-stained wood balances out the light furnishings and bridges both spaces. Highlights include a mini-Saarinen table and pink ghost chairs.

R Brant Design

Designers:
Brant McFarlain

Awards:
Modern Luxury Best of Design Awards

Address:
3723 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231

About R Brant Design

Two busy engineers tasked McFarlain — along with home’s architect, builder, and landscape designers — with the goal of making their home feel as if they were on vacation. They were looking for a modern space with natural light and connections to the outdoors. In the past, the couple’s homes had lacked a strong identity. The couple also often entertain and host charity fundraisers. McFarlain started with a neutral color base for the interiors, along with white-oak floors and cabinetry to match the client’s existing Persian rugs. This made room for rich mohair and velvet-clad furnishings and dark Zoffany wallpaper in the powder rooms. The master bathroom is a true escape, with a soak tub against floor-to-ceiling exterior walls (protected by a privacy fence on the outside of the courtyard). The luxurious room also features Calacatta Gold marble on top of white-oak cabinetry by 3L Designs and an Oceanside Glasstile backsplash by Ann Sacks. For the designer’s own Turtle Creek home, featured in PaperCity Magazine, McFarlain went for a blend of modern European and ‘20s-era gentlemen’s club. The 5,000-square-foot space uses knotted woods, limestone, and bronze details. Gray limestone floors hold the leather and mohair furnishings. Unique pieces include jade artwork hanging under a Christian Liaigre console and a Tony Sherman painting over a Holly Hunt sofa.

Featured Projects

Brant McFarlain offers commercial and residential interior design. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas, he worked as a designer for Leo A. Daly and Morrison Seifert Murphy before starting his own company. He incorporates a love of fashion into his work. He won the Best Dining Room in Modern Luxury’s Best of Design Awards in 2017.

About Collins Interiors

Cynthia Collins founded her firm, specializing in full-scale residential design, in 1992. They often supplement these finds with pieces from modern showrooms, and upholstery custom-designed by the designer. Collins has been named one of the Best Designers in Dallas by D Magazine each year from 2011 through 2017. You can find her work in Mediterranean Homes and Lifestyle, Dallas Styles and Design, and Better Homes and Gardens, among other publications.

Featured Projects

Collins was brought into help with the interiors of a Georgian-style home by the excellent Stocker Hoesterey Montenegro firm. The home had a mix of traditional touches, from the holdings to the mantels, but a modern sensibility. Collins paired the family’s antique collection with new custom furnishings and vintage pieces from the 1940s through 1970s. The blend of styles and ages is pulled together through textures and colors found on the art, rugs, and upholstery. Collins was tasked with the design of an expansive Bluffview estate totaling 14k square feet. Highlights of the architecture of this modern Texas home include stone arches and antique wooden beams, antique pine floors, and maple paneling. Collins used a rich, modern aesthetic to match the home’s size and intricate details. A custom, modern white light fixture designed by Collins hangs over a mohair sectional in the family room. Chandeliers by Swarovski, Patricia Urquiola, and Paul Ferrante adorn other rooms and serve a stunning visual centerpieces.

Allen Kirsch and Associates

Designers:

Awards:
D Magazine Best Designers,
Luxe Mgaine Gold List

Address:
4446 Westway Avenue, Dallas, TX 75205

About Allen Kirsch and Associates

This designer has been on the Best Designer list in D Home magazine for the past 10 years, as well as Luxe Magazine’s Gold List for the last three. His work has been featured in Minimal Interiors Beautiful Homes of Texas, among many others. Among the Kirsch’s boasts is designing Oprah’s favorite Chicago restaurant. His services include interior decorating and custom-designed furnishings.

Featured Projects

A couple who had tended toward traditional homes and design for 30 years decided to go modern. Kirsch, who’d helped the couple with their last three homes, helped them do something new for their Preston Hollow home designed by Sharif & Munir Custom Homes. The couple were active art collectors and planned to acquire new, large contemporary pieces. Their existing Asian antiques create a richness next to new furnishings designed by Kirsch, and classic mid-20th century pieces designed by Knoll, Mies van der Rohe, and George Nelson. Kirsch recommended a neutral color palette to feature the art collection, which quickly grew to include works by Brad Ellis and Shane Pennington, among many others. Designing for another extensive art collector, Kirsch designed rift-cut oak walls with a blonde finish as a backdrop for the artwork. The rift-oak paneling can be found on the home’s cabinets, as well. Kirsch chose weighty stone tiles for the fireplace wall in the master bedroom to balance out a stunning Pat Steir original. Two stunning tables custom-designed by Kirsch complement the modern collection, including a white-oak cantilevered sofa table with a steel frame in the family room and a marble table with 18 leather chairs in the dining room.

Denise’s Trademarked process for “Designing with a Deadline” makes her the go-to designer for clients who want luxury, but not the wait. Denise McGaha has been featured in national advertising campaigns for luxury manufacturers including Miele, Loloi Rugs, and Silestone by Cosentino, and had the privilege of being named the 2014-2016 Brand Ambassador for Currey & Co.

Featured Projects

McGaha designed to enhance the quiet elegance of her client’s four-bedroom, 6,500-square-foot limestone home. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the family and dining rooms offering forested views are paired with limestone slab floors and gray ledgestone walls with gray-washed white oak ceilings. To work with all this stately gray and stone, McGaha used large showpiece lighting fixtures, including a vintage Robert Haussmann chandelier and her own five-foot pendant design. She used the couple’s favorite colors — red and plum — in textures on the walls and upholstery throughout the home, without the dark colors overwhelming the rooms.

A neoclassical home in the Park Cities area featured many ornate details, such as elaborate ceiling designs and crown molding. McGaha helped the new owners decide what to keep and what to simplify. For instance, she encouraged them to keep the unique ceilings and replace the living room’s white marble mantel. McGaha chose a black Nero marble to balance out the large windows and plasterwork ceiling. In the foyer and dining room, McGaha chose a dark, leaf-patterned wood veneer as a backdrop for the couple’s extensive art collection, pulled together by carved golden frames. The home’s unique classical features match the traditional tastes of its owners, while modern details keep it trendy and fresh.

Kirsten Kelli

Designers:
Kirsten Fitzgibbons
Kelli Ford

Awards:
Paper City Dallas Design Awards

Address:
6601 Turtle Creek Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75205

About Kirsten Kelli

The sister duo comprised of Kirsten Fitzgibbons and Kelli Ford have been working as Kirsten Kelli since 1990, with offices in New York City, Dallas, and Greenwich, Connecticut. They also run MADISON, a luxury gift shop in Dallas’ Highland Park Village. Their work has been featured in Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, and Veranda. Kirsten Kelli won a Paper City’s 2016 Design Award for Residential Interior Design over 3,500 square Feet. The pair is known for their blend of classic and contemporary styles.

Featured Projects

Southern Living featured a Dallas home decorated by the sisters. Exquisite limestone walls with a limestone fireplace create the perfect classic Southern porch. The designers soften the space with green striped upholstery over wicker chairs and sofa, complete with colorful, patterned throw pillows. A mix of patterns makes the large space feel homier. Soft grey upholstery is paired with elegant yellow drapes. Yellow accents on more throw pillows pull them together. Kelli Ford is married to banker billionaire Gerald Ford. The couple own a Highland Park mansion, which tops the list of most expensive homes in Dallas, according to D Magazine. The 25,791-square-foot mansion has six bedrooms and 10 full- and six half baths. It also includes a 2,000-square-foot Turkish bath, which was featured on HGTV’s Million Dollar Rooms. The spa was inspired by the Roman Pool at the Hearst Castle in California. Ford and her sister created the custom blue and gold tile mosaics covering the spa’s walls. Ford imported custom-designed chandeliers from Syria to hang above the pool.

Joseph Minton

Designers:
Joseph Minton

Awards:
ASID Designer of Distinction Award

Address:
2623 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth, TX 76107

About Joseph Minton

Minton has been a nationally active designer for almost four decades. He has been listed in the AD 100 — Architectural Digest’s list of the world’s top interior designers and architects, as well as Town and Country’s Guide to the Top 55 Decorators in the US. In 1996 Minton received the ASID Designer of Distinction Award for lifetime achievement. Still an active force from his Fort Worth base, Minton’s work and recommendations are frequently seen in D Magazine and Luxe Interiors and Design, as well as in national publications.

Featured Projects

Minton and his associate Paula Lowes teamed up with architect Ralph Duesing and builder Brad Deering to remodel a couple’s brick ranch. In the newly remodeled kitchen, a custom banquette designed by Minton features Sunbrella fabric and is paired with an antique trestle table. The four-bedroom, five-bathroom home had large rooms with tall ceilings and totalled 5,300 square feet. It called for large pieces that could fill the space. The large living room was split into two sitting areas, using a fireplace and a modern painting by New York painter Corinne Jones as focal points. Minton used oversized, upholstered pieces with chenille tops. A bench and throw pillows contain a matching needlepoint pattern and tie the pieces together. When two art collectors moved in together, the result was a mix of styles that posed a challenge. The Fort Worth home offered a U-shaped layout around a courtyard and pool. Minton used classical details, such as quarter-sawn, white oak paneling, and a silk wallcovering in the master bedroom. Sixteen 10-foot-tall columns made with Leuders limestone separate the three wings of the home, while visually pulling them together. The couple’s collections can exist in different spaces, but are pulled together by the columns. The wife’s art collection was especially extensive, including Picassos and pieces from notable Texas artists like James Blake and Bill Bomar. Minton found a Lee Jofa floral print containing the wife’s favorite color combination: yellow, green, and coral. The color scheme is used throughout. The couple’s favorite furnishings, which they brought from their previous residences, were recovered to match the new palette.

Staffelbach’s design of the Clarion Partners office received two first-place awards from the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and a First Place Award from the National ASID. The new office is located on the top floor of 17Seventeen McKinney. Glass conference room walls and floor-to-ceiling exterior windows preserve the office’s skyline views of downtown and refreshing, natural light. Workstations are broken into neighborhoods for noise management and maximum team functionality. Amenities include a private study for partners, and a multifunctional café, which can be used for training sessions and other event functions. Another award-winning office project is the Ackerman McQueen advertising agency. The company hired Staffelbach because it needed a space that matched the agency’s sleek branding. Starting with two porcelain tile colors in the reception area, the design is split into dark and light sections. A skywalk offers floor-to-ceiling views of the skyline and connects the lobby to executive spaces. A presentation room uses automatic window coverings to block light from the panoramic windows. In 2014, the office design won two second-place awards from ASID.

The Harwood Group wanted to offer something that is unique in Dallas: The Happiest Hour was the result. At 12,800 square feet, it’s the largest patio bar and lounge in the city, featuring a full kitchen, several bars, and a 3,000-square-foot rooftop patio — a project that took years to put together. The layout is precise and accommodates the bar’s high volume. Downstairs features circular tables, booths, and an L-shaped seated bar, while the upstairs contains comfy red-leather couches. Happiest Hour was one of D Magazine’s Best Bars in 2017 and 2015 and was Reader’s Choice for Best View from a Bar in 2016. Coveal Studio also designed Pakpao Thai, found in the Design District, which is the opposite of The Happiest Hour because it is very small. The limited space, only 1,300 square feet with a 20-foot kitchen, creates an intimate and lively space. Pakpao means “kite,” and the design features handmade Pakpao and Chula kites imported from Thailand. JonesBaker Interiors and Architecture

Architects:
William Baker and JB Jones

Address:
1922 S Akard, Suite A, Dallas, TX 75215

About JonesBaker Interiors and Architecture

William Baker and JB Jones founded their studio in 1998 and they started with working on small-scale renovations for acquaintances. They’ve since grown to eight employees and have worked on projects around the world, as well as on notable Dallas restaurants like Meso Maya and Cook Hall. Now, JonesBaker Interiors and Architecture focus on the food and beverage and hospitality industries.

Featured Projects

Principal William Baker attempts to bring the bustling streets of Thailand to CrushCraft, which offers Thai street food to its Uptown customers.
He asked for the owner’s family to bring memorabilia from Thailand and used it as decorations for the restaurant. The back of the restaurant — a glass half-dome made of pink granite and stucco — did not fit the design. Instead, Baker used slat wood and locally grown bamboo to cover the walls and ceiling. He also contracted with Color Condition, a group offering streamer decorations, to create Thai-themed interchangeable installations. The installation features animated, brightly colored ribbons that fill the space with energy. The firm’s goal for designing Bowl & Barrel, a boutique bowling alley, was to reinterpret the American classic and make it more warm and intimate. The space also features a bar with a craft menu from former York Street chef Sharon Hage. The firm used structural columns to break up the large space into more intimate pockets and broke up the ceiling height by adding arched wood trusses. For its interiors, chic leather sofas and lounge furniture, along with a large communal table in the bar area were used to finish the modern classic space.

I was always trying to design the perfect South African home for myself in the vernacular that I loved. Gradually I became more commercial and became involved with Wilson Associates when they were working in South Africa, and I transitioned from architecture to interior architecture when I moved to the USA and focused on understanding drawing furniture and the detail involved. I think, wherever you go you see things that really resonate with you. I believe that through travel and observation, connection to nature and an appreciation of surroundings, you can always be inspired.” -Michael Crosby

Committed to producing every client’s dream home in any style of architecture, Robert Elliot Custom Homes builds all over University Park, Highland Park, Preston Hollow, and the surrounding areas. The firm emphasizes the collaborative process with its clients to best customize each home, which enabled the firm to be named one of D Magazine’s Best Home Builders since 2014.

Featured Projects

Robert Elliott teamed up with architect Brent Slocum from B.K. Design Studio to assist with the interior architecture for a new home in the University Park neighborhood. The home has traditional and modern architectural elements that help blend the client’s wishes for an elegant but casual and functional home. The home has classic touches, such as arched windows with steel frames, and more eclectic design choices, such as a front door to open up into a room, rather than a traditional entryway. With three young children, the family wanted a home with lots of outdoor space. To maximize the outdoor, the firm used a covered patio that leads out to a pool area lined with magnolia trees.

Featured Projects

Sharif & Munir designed the Dallas home of residential designer Robert Trown. The limestone clad home with a triple-stacked, red-tile roof blends the influences of California, France, Portugal, and Spain. It sports ceiling beams and oak floors made from reclaimed wood and an antique stone mantel from Pittet Architecturals. Designed in a U-shape, the home’s large, steel-framed windows look out onto an interior courtyard. The home builders creatively produced double-thick walls by mixing paint into plaster as it was being applied. The end result is a textured, mottled wall. The firm worked with architect Vernon Berry to create a contemporary home in Preston Hollow. Designed for art collectors, the home uses indirect light and frosted glass to best display their artwork on museum-finish walls. The 5,620-square-foot, three-bedroom home sits on a .372 acre lot with a downstairs master suite, a living room on both levels, and two dining rooms. Rift-cut white oak pillars separate the kitchen from the living room, which has matching built-in white oak cabinets. The home features a modern floating staircase that leads to a split-level sitting room.
